Some work from earlier this week.....

  These are some photos of acetate drawings I did over the weekend. I hurt my thumb this week so all I could really do was take photographs...thankfully it is getting better, which is good because I really have a lot of work I want to get done over the weekend.
  So with these images I was trying to capture the sense of an imprint upon a space, the trace of someone once they have temporarily occupied the space. I was looking at the acetate from different angles when I realised there was kind of a projected shadow of the drawing on the wall when I held it in front of the lamp.....So I had a bit of fun with the different ways of documenting this one work.......

In reality , the shadow that was created was far stronger and clearer than this. It really didn't photograph well, but I liked it when I saw it as a stronger projected image.

I find this one the most interesting. Not being egocentric but I like how my reflection can be seen in the photo...it's like my trace left behind...see what I did there....???!

These are black and white copies, the images almost become transparent.

I like this for the same reason as the similar one above.

Music Video Inspiration!

After using the projector on Sunday I started noticing how it's used a lot, in art, on TV and in things we see everyday but don't really consider, like music videos. So I'm going to post some of my favourite examples ....

 Lana Del Rey's 'Summertime Sadness' video (directed by Spencer Susse and Kyle Newman, with director of photography Morgan Susser 2012 ) has several clips where a video of telephone wires have been projected onto the singer.





Rihanna's ' We Found Love' ( directed by Melina Matsoukas, 2011 ) .

Marina and the diamonds' Primadonna ' ( directed by  Casper Balslev, 2012 )






Ok so I'm really sure there are loads more but I can't seem to think of them right now, I might add to this later!

Peter Coffin.

 Over the weekend I was looking through the library book 'The Art Of Tomorrow' ( Laura Hoptman, Yilmaz Dziewior Uta Grosenick ) and I was pretty interested in the work of Peter Coffin. The book mentioned Coffin's project 'Untitled' ( Tate Britian, 2009 ) in which he curated work from Tate's permanent collection in an exhibition and combined them with a 'bespoke projected animation  and soundtrack'.
 What I liked about these works was how , in my opinion, Coffin, through his use of projected videos and audio ,changed the way we see these familiar works of art. He gave them a new life of their own!

 I am kind of working slightly backward, because over the weekend I experimented with projection and photography before I had really looked in depth at artists who use this medium. Now that I have started with it,I plan on researching ways I can bring it to a further point....So I guess I'm not doing things totally backwards this week. I had a lot of fun with the projector and my beautiful sisters,who modelled, (patiently.....!) for me for hours. I want to edit through the images this week before I post them , find the ones that work the best..... I was trying to convey the idea of our imprint/trace upon a space, but also the trace of a paticular space/ environment upon us .....

 Anyway (before I got sidetracked by my own work...) I was blogging about Peter Coffin's work.

   
 These are some of the stills from Coffin's project at the Tate, Britian in 2009. His projections completely change my interpretation of these artworks.

  I also like these works from 2007. Coffin created silhouette sculptures and stood them infront of projected images . Shadows were created upon the projected photos. These are kind of like what I did, except I used people instead of sculptures..but ,maybe this is something I could move onto....

                    

  

My Trace...

  It was suggested to me by my tutors to create a stop-motion film recording my movements within a space, in order to capture my trace.  This is a short one that I made and it shows both my movements and my subsequent trace in my space...(in this case my kitchen)....

  

Blurry Photos and Smudged Lines....

 So this is a very quick post of some of my work from last week and from over the weekend...

 I have been mainly trying to depict our imprint/trace upon a space or our surrounding environment ,beginning through photography and moving from these images to paint or pastel drawings.  I also made a stop motion film which I will upload later once I have edited it....

                    

'Bricks in the Rain'

   Yesterday we visited an exhibition in Dublin's Farmleigh Gallery, ‘Bricks in the Rain, Contemporary Ceramics inspired by China’.It is a multi-disciplinary exhibition of ceramic art, film and sound. We were lucky enough to be with our tutor Elaine Riordan who was one of the ceramic artists exhibiting and Neil Read, also one of the artists, who talked us through the exhibition. The group of ceramic artists involved in 'Bricks in the Rain' were selected in 2011 by international jury to undertake a 5-week residency at Fule International Ceramic Art Museum, in X’ian, China. They created a body of artwork, using local materials and facilities. These artworks are now displayed at the new Irish Pavilion, ensuring a permanent display of Irish ceramic art in China. Having formed friendships with 3 Swiss ceramic artists and documented their experience in text, photography and film; they bring all elements together in this ground-breaking show.

    I really enjoyed the day and I think many of us came away eager to try incorporate ceramics into our projects.....The exhibition is well worth a visit and there is more details on the website...
http://bricksintherain.com/ .The artworks are beautiful and mixed with the 'sounds of China' playing in the gallery spaces you can really appreciate each artist's response to their time spent in China.

Prints....

Over the weekend I took hundreds of photographs, none of which I feel are ready for this yet....they are all works in progress, but I had a lot of fun with them ! I was trying out some news things....
What I am going to post are photographs of some prints I did on Friday. I etched the images into acetate and messed around with paint, oil pastels and ink.

 

Well this is actually just a paper cut-out.
