Type continued...

So I spent today working on typography and here is the result. Some of the work is 3D which I took photos of. I have yet to decide on my finished piece as I'm not sure which one conveys 'SUBMERGE' best , I'll have a look back on them all , but I like some of the later work. Hopefully I'll have that and my illustration sorted for tomorrow. It's such bad timing to have gotten sick this week but it has almost helped me make up my mind about the disciplines. Visual Communications is the discipline I want as my first choice and I'm only annoyed at myself for missing the last few days!! I loved last week and I've enjoyed working away with the type even though I couldn't give it as much time and effort as I would have liked.      With some of these photos I altered them slightly in Windows Photo Gallery, like putting colours through etc to help convey the essence and meaning associated with my word.

These were my final thumbnails from today.

I made this using the glue gun and then physically submerged it in water.

I used washing powder to build up around the letters.

Typography Thumbnails....

So here's my work from yesterday. I was mainly drawing thumbnails but I moved onto some 3D work too. My word is 'Submerge' so I was trying to convey a type associated with water...sinking the word under water, making it look like it's being pulled under water, making the word in materials associated with underwater/ the sea/ submarines etc.... Today I'm going to try out some more 3D typography and try and improve my illustration and decide upon a finished type. I'm hoping to be in college tomorrow for assessments as it's the last day of Vis Comm !

Type made of Olive Oil .

I like the top right example, the reflection of the word is rippled on top to suggest the word is under water.

I covered some of these words in cling film to distort the type in the same way looking through water distorts objects.

I used an old necklace for this but the idea behind it is the large chains ships use when dropping anchors...

I kind of like this idea of turning the 'E' on its side and sharpening it to suggest to the eye an anchor....as though it is dragging the word down, submerging it.

Top type, the idea of the world in general submerged in financial concerns or crisis.
Middle type, the word semi-submerged, as though under water.
Bottom type, making the word slightly resemble a submarine.

Research Material: Typography

Here is some of the typography I collected yesterday, some of it is so clever it makes me almost sigh, with that 'how smart are they' kinda feeling. I love them and it's clear how much can be done with type.

Clever typography.

Typography

Monday we began working on the typography part of our brief. It was really fun coming up with typefaces and ways of depicting the meaning of my word in just type. I had done some thumbnail drawings and taken some photographs on Sunday but I realised on Monday that they may have been too illustrative. I'm posting them as a way of showing my (hopeful) development this week. My thumbnails from Monday are still in college so I'm not able to post those as I'm at home sick since yesterday. Today I plan on continuing my thumbnails and start experimenting more with type. Yesterday I got some research done and also looked at the typography lecture. Hopefully I'll be able to post a lot of work by tonight.

Type made from sponges.

I think this one in particular may be too illustrative as I'm depending on the leaves in the puddle to convey some of the meaning of 'submerge' but it was fun to experiment with.

Final illustation : SUBMERGE

We had a really helpful group crit yesterday morning.
We had to comment on each other and our own work. I was showing my final two concept pieces and the majority of the group seemed to think my submerged globe was the best idea. I'm going to work on this for the next week and hopefully get it up to a good standard. I'm so excited also to be starting typography next week !! Fun times ahead :-)  And  I'm going to try get some research into type and photoshop tutorials done tomorrow . I'm really liking graphics and every day I'm starting to think it might be the elective I'll choose. It just seems to be such a tough thing to decide...

Anyway, back on point...here are my two final illustrations, my attempts to convey the word 'SUBMERGE'.  The image with the submerged globe on the left will be my chosen finished illustration.
